Update: Status of Jump and Strafe Mechanics
Since yesterday's patch there has been a lot of discussion surrounding the jump and strafe mechanics in game. I have personally spoken with the team at length on both subjects leading into the Season 3 patch and all the way through to what is on live currently. After finishing these conversations I wanted to take a moment to update you all on where these systems are currently and what the team's stance is on these systems going forward.
PS3 Jump Mechanics:
This week we brought back the “delayed/sliding jump” mechanic and animation set that players remember from PS3. This completes both the animation and mechanic suites of the jump package.
Air strafe (and air control) did not exist in Preseason 3. It was introduced as part of the infamous Combat Update era of changes in mid-late 2017. However, in order to recreate the classic “delayed/sliding jump” of PS3 with our more advanced animation system, it was necessary to add a small amount of air strafe control. However, some air control did exist in PS3, giving you the ability to stand completely still, jump and then move in a direction. This would allow players to jump up onto objects/walls more easily. This system does interpret this slightly different than the older system did in PS3 which is why it has a small effect on your in air movement now. We have extensively looked through both the data and animation network in an effort to make sure we are bringing the players the correct version of the “jump” from PS3. While there may be some minor differences from PS3, we hope this explanation clears up any confusion on the part of the players. We don’t intend to make any further changes to the jump animations during Season 3.
PS3 Strafe Mechanics:
This week we also patched in the strafe “slide” animation that was missing and tuned the speeds of strafing to give it a more responsive feel. This completes both the animation and mechanical systems for strafe. We are locking in this version of strafe for the remainder of Season 3.
We appreciate everyone’s feedback and will evaluate further changes for Season 4 and beyond.
EDIT: Struck out a line that was a misunderstanding of a system on my part and was not accurate. Added new text to replace with a corrected description "However, some air control did exist in PS3, giving you the ability to stand completely still, jump and then move in a direction. This would allow players to jump up onto objects/walls more easily."
